one of the five sacred sites, and its legends.

one of the five sacred stupas respected by both Burmese
and foreigners is the Shwemawdaw Paya, or what Thais call Phra That Mu Tao (meaning 'hot nose'), an ancient stupa built during the glory days of the Mon civlization, located in Bago.

Many legends have been told of its history. One of them is that during the Buddha's lifetime, two brother traveled to India for trade and was in the presence of the Buddha, who gave them two stands of his hair and told them to build a stupa at the land of Hongsawadee. The two, assisted by the holiness of the Buddha, arrived quickly there. The stupa was built initially in a modest form, but was gradually renovated until it became the grand one it is to day.

Another legend follows the story of King Bayinnaung. it was said that his mother, When pregnant with him, craved for soil and water from the land of Hongsawadee. Therefore, for the ceremony. The land then belonged to the enemy, so as he took part in the ceremony which was held in the stupa, he wished to one day rule over the land - a wish that came true. From then on, the King would visit the stupa during eventually building a palace nearby.
